6 Ways to Give During the Holiday Season

post-default

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” – Winston Churchill

With the holiday season upon us, it’s easy to get distracted making travel plans, shopping for presents and attending special holiday events. But, we shouldn’t forget that this is the season of giving! As you’re making your holiday plans, consider adding these things to your list.

1. Take a look around and see where your help is needed most in your community. Volunteer at the local soup kitchen, help out at a Habitat for Humanity build or visit a local nursing home. Volunteer for a few hours or dedicate an entire weekend. Any extra time you have to give can make a big difference in the lives of others. 2. Make a donation on Giving Tuesday. With the days following Thanksgiving focused around spending (Black Friday, Shop Small Saturday and Cyber Monday), Giving Tuesday is a way to combat the commercialism around the holidays and bring Thanksgiving back to its roots. Choose an organization that is close to your heart (perhaps the Kappa Delta Foundation) and give back. Any amount can make a difference. Share your participating in Giving Tuesday on social media and encourage others to support a cause they are close to.

3. Adopt a family for the holidays. This is such a rewarding experience! There are several community organizations that can help you find a family in need. Make it a sisterhood activity and adopt a family as a group. When you deliver the gifts and see the smiles you helped bring to the family’s faces, it will be worth every penny and minute.

4. Love yourself. It’s important to take time for ourselves in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the holidays. The holidays are most enjoyable when you’re happy and healthy, so make sure you check-in with yourself every once in a while. It can be as simple as writing what you are thankful for once a day or reading a new book over your holiday break.

5. Thank your co-workers, friends and family. The year has been full of ups and downs. Let the people in your life know you appreciate them. Hand-write a note to your mentor or someone you admire. Call your mom and let her know you’re thankful for her. Bring a sweet treat to the office to thank your team members for their hard work.

6. Give to Kappa Delta. We wouldn’t be where we are today without generous donations of the Kappa Deltas who came before us. Help provide current and future generations with the Kappa Delta experience we cherish so deeply by making a donation to the Kappa Delta Foundation.
