Volunteer Spotlight – Kathy Hoffa

Kathy Hoffa, Sigma Pi-Albion, was able to make a difference from the comfort of her home. Volunteering with the Kappa Delta Foundation for the first time this year, Kathy evaluated 36 applications for merit-based undergraduate scholarships. In addition to those originally assigned to her, Kathy enthusiastically took on additional evaluations when the need arose.

For Kathy, volunteering means reconnecting with the sisterhood that means so much to her. “This opportunity connects me to the stories of the young women who are currently members seeking scholarships,” says Kathy. From volunteering, Kathy says she loves the feeling that she has contributed to helping deserving Kappa Delta women obtain scholarships that help them earn their degree and make the most out of their time in college. Volunteers like Kathy make it possible for the foundation to distribute over $900k to students across the country for the upcoming school year.

We had the opportunity to chat with Kathy, who was able to offer insight and advice about being a first-time volunteer with the Kappa Delta Foundation.

What inspired you to volunteer for Kappa Delta?

My years as a member of the Sigma Pi Chapter at Albion College shaped me into the woman I am today. When I graduated and moved to a different part of the country, Kappa Delta alumnae were there for me as friends. With so many positive experiences with Kappa Delta, I have desired to give back for some time, but it was difficult as I live some distance from a collegiate chapter. So this opportunity was perfect for me!

Tell us about a special moment you had as a first-time volunteer.

I told my family what I was doing as a volunteer. One night I got home later than usual and still wanted to get some applications reviewed but had other household things to do as well. My family stepped up to take care of the other things for me because they saw how important it was to me to do this volunteer work.

Looking back on your first time evaluating scholarship applications, what advice do you have for other Kappa Deltas who might be interested in doing this in the future?

It can be a little scary to say you will do something without knowing exactly what will be asked of you or what guidelines or training you will receive. I must say that the training that the foundation provided was excellent and allowed me to feel comfortable with what I was asked to do.
