Kappa Delta volunteers are our foundation. They give their time, energy and expertise to keep Kappa Delta moving forward, and our organization would not be the same without them. Every month on the Emerald Edit, we’ll highlight one of our many incredible volunteers to showcase the impact they have on our members.
Kim Caselden, Eta Delta-Wright State, has served on the Kappa Delta Foundation’s Scholarship Review Committee since 2022. Throughout her four years of service, she has evaluated both undergraduate and graduate scholarship applications, allowing her to connect to Kappa Delta across a range of experiences all over the country.
For Kim, evaluating scholarship applications is a special opportunity for her to recognize all the sorority has given to her throughout the years. Reflecting on her various KD roles, Kim says, “It is important to me to give back to Kappa Delta from a place of gratitude for all that its values and sisterhood have done for me and my life.”
To turn generosity into opportunity, Kim dedicates about 20 hours each winter. Her thoughtfulness and insight, alongside the 200+ sisters who volunteer to review applications, enable the Kappa Delta Foundation to award over 300 scholarships every year to collegiate and graduate student.
We recently had the chance to chat with Kim, who shared with us some of the sweetest parts about her time volunteering for the foundation.
What I’ve enjoyed most is the ability to find shared experiences and inspiration from my sisters across the nation. Reading a scholarship application from a sister’s point of view – learning about her hard work, aspirations and future dreams, as well as what Kappa Delta has meant to her – has been a gift year over year.
One particular scholarship season, I was dealing with a great amount in my personal life. I had missed the deadline for submitting my scholarship application scores and I remember feeling disappointed in myself. I received a follow-up about scoring my assigned applications and was given a small extension to complete the work. What stood out to me was that it came without shame or pressure to explain. For me, it was just the right amount of grace and reaffirmed why I volunteer my time to begin with.
My best advice for beginning to volunteer with Kappa Delta is to determine why you want to volunteer and continue to remind yourself of that purpose time and time again. I would also say that if you have even the smallest desire in your heart to give back to this organization, lean into that. Know that your sisters will continue to support you and that resources are available for just about any question you could have!
There are so many opportunities to share your time and talent. From working with a local collegiate chapter on a chapter advisory board or house corporation board to serving on a foundation committee like the scholarship review committee, we are grateful for the thousands of alumnae who give back to KD.
