April 3, 2026
Every April, communities across the country come together for Child Abuse Prevention Month — a time to raise awareness, strengthen families and celebrate the environments every child deserves to grow up in: safe, supported and full of opportunity.
For Kappa Deltas, this month carries special meaning. For more than 40 years, Kappa Delta has partnered with Prevent Child Abuse America to advance prevention efforts, support families and create lasting impact in communities nationwide. Together, we are working toward a world where all children grow up happy, healthy and prepared to succeed.

Kappa Delta’s connection to child abuse prevention began with one of our own. In 1972, KD sister Donna Stone, Lambda-Northwestern, helped found the organization that would later become Prevent Child Abuse America. Her vision was simple but powerful: when families have the support and resources they need, children are far more likely to grow up in safe, stable and nurturing environments.
In 1981, Kappa Delta proudly adopted Prevent Child Abuse America as a national philanthropy, strengthening a partnership that continues to create meaningful impact today. Since then, Kappa Delta members have raised over $38 million and dedicated countless hours of service to advance prevention programs, education and support for families nationwide.

Child abuse prevention is more than responding to problems after they occur. True prevention focuses on strengthening families before challenges arise. That means ensuring parents and caregivers have access to the tools, resources and support they need to create stable, nurturing homes.
Through educational programs, community partnerships and advocacy, Prevent Child Abuse America works to build support for families across the country. Kappa Delta members help advance that mission through fundraising, awareness campaigns and volunteer service with local beneficiary organizations.

If you see bright blue pinwheels spinning across campuses and communities in April, they’re more than just cheerful decorations. The Pinwheels for Prevention® campaign represents the joyful, carefree childhood every child deserves.
Pinwheels serve as a visible symbol of hope — a reminder that when communities come together to support families, children can grow up surrounded by care, encouragement and opportunity. Across the country, Kappa Delta chapters and alumnae groups plant pinwheels, host awareness events and share prevention resources throughout April to help keep this message front and center.

One of the most powerful ways Kappa Delta supports child abuse prevention is through Shamrock events hosted by collegiate chapters each year. These events raise funds for both Prevent Child Abuse America and local child abuse prevention organizations working directly within their communities.
What makes Shamrock especially impactful is its local reach. 80% of funds raised stay within the community where they were generated, helping local agencies provide family support services, educational programs and resources for caregivers.
These partnerships ensure that Kappa Delta’s efforts create real change where our members live, learn and serve.

Child Abuse Prevention Month offers many opportunities for Kappa Delta sisters to take action.
On Wear Blue Day (April 10, 2026), sisters across the country trade their signature green for blue — the color of hope and protection — to raise awareness and spark conversations about prevention. Sharing photos, planting pinwheels, supporting Shamrock events and spreading awareness on social media are all ways members can help elevate the mission.
Even small actions help spread the message that prevention is possible when communities work together to support families.

Child Abuse Prevention Month is a powerful reminder of the role each of us plays in building safer, more supportive communities for children. Through decades of partnership, Kappa Delta has demonstrated that when people come together with purpose and compassion, lasting change is possible.
By continuing to support families, uplift prevention efforts and share awareness, Kappa Delta sisters carry forward a legacy of hope — helping create confident lives, strong families and thriving communities for generations to come.
