Mornings That Empower: Simple Habits to Start Your Day Right

By: Sophie Henner (Zeta Xi-Rollins)

Let’s be honest—whether you’re a morning person or not, getting out of bed isn’t always easy. Even as someone who leans toward being an early riser, I still have those “just five more minutes” moments.

Over the years, my mornings have evolved with each season of life, but one thing has stayed the same: having a routine. A morning routine isn’t about perfection or following a rigid plan—it’s about small, intentional habits that help you feel grounded, prepared and ready to take on the day.

Here’s a look at the key parts of my morning routine and why they’ve been game-changers for me.

Start the night before

A peaceful morning starts with preparation the night before. I’ve found that having a clean, organized space makes a huge difference in how I feel when I wake up. Before bed, I spend a few minutes stretching, tidying my room, planning my outfit and prepping anything I’ll need. This small habit helps me avoid feeling rushed and sets a calm tone for the next day.

Rise with the sun

I’ve recently switched to a Hatch alarm clock, and it’s been a total game-changer. Instead of being jolted awake by a blaring alarm, I’m gently woken by a warm light that mimics the sunrise. It’s a much more peaceful way to start the day.

If you don’t have a Hatch alarm clock, you can still take advantage of natural light to ease into your mornings. Try keeping your curtains or blinds slightly open so the morning sunlight gradually filters into your room as the sun rises. Waking up with the natural rhythm of daylight can feel refreshing and help regulate your sleep cycle. Adding a few minutes by the window to soak in the sunlight can also boost your energy and mood to start the day.

Wake up refreshed

Once I’m out of bed, I grab my ice roller. It’s seriously one of my favorite morning rituals. The cool sensation wakes me up instantly, gets rid of puffiness, and leaves my skin feeling so refreshed. It’s like a little spa moment to start the day! If you don’t have an ice roller, no worries—just wrap a couple of ice cubes in a washcloth or grab a cold spoon from the freezer. It works just as well and feels super refreshing!

Move your body

Before diving into the busyness of the day, I take five to ten minutes to stretch. Gentle movement helps loosen stiffness and improve circulation. Sometimes I’ll add a few yoga poses or a short walk if time allows. It’s a simple way to connect with my body and boost my energy.

Find your calm

After stretching, I take a few minutes to meditate. I usually use Headspace for guided meditations, but sometimes I just sit quietly and focus on my breathing. It’s such a great way to clear my mind, reduce stress and feel more grounded. Even if I only have a few minutes, it helps me start the day feeling calm and present.

Start with gratitude

Gratitude has been a powerful way to set a positive tone for my day. I think of three things I’m grateful for—whether it’s something simple, like a sunny day or meaningful, like the support of loved ones. This practice shifts my mindset to focus on what’s going right in my life.

Put pen to paper

Journaling is one of the most impactful parts of my routine. Using my Simply So + Co. Planner and Journal and the Five Minute Journal app (great for those on the go), I jot down my thoughts, reflect on my goals and set intentions for the day. Writing things down keeps me organized, mindful of my priorities and ready to take on what lies ahead.

My mornings aren’t about being perfect—they’re about creating space for what matters most and setting myself up for success. Of course, life doesn’t always go according to plan, so it’s important to be flexible when routines get interrupted.

If you’re looking to refine your mornings, start small. Pick one or two habits that resonate with you and build from there. Remember, your routine doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s—it’s about finding what works for your life and priorities.

By making small, intentional changes, you can create mornings that leave you energized, organized, and confident.
