In college, friendships can feel easy. Your sisters are right down the hall, sitting next to you at chapter or they’re waiting for you to get lunch after class.
Then graduation happens.
Careers, moves, relationships and new responsibilities can take sisters in different directions. You may not see each other every day — or even every month — but that doesn’t mean the friendship becomes less important.
It just means it’s different – it’s growing into something new.
After graduation, there isn’t always a built-in reason to see or talk to each other. Staying close might mean putting a phone call or FaceTime date on the calendar, planning a weekend trip months in advance or simply sending a text to say “hi.”
You may talk less often now, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re less close! Sometimes it means learning how to stay connected while your lives evolve.
One of the best parts of a long-lasting friendship is getting to watch your bestie grow.
The sister you knew in college may move to a new city, start a new career, get married, become a parent or take on something she never imagined for herself. And she’ll get to watch you do the same!
Good friends give us space to change while continuing to support us along the way. Having women in your life who know where you started, and still encourage you to take the next step, can give you confidence when you need it most.
Maybe you once talked every day, and now you catch up once a month. Maybe your friendship lives mostly in a group chat. Or, maybe you see each other once a year. That’s ok! There isn’t one right way to stay in touch.
As life gets busier, what matters is continuing to show up for each other – celebrating the good news, checking in during hard times and making time for one another when you can.
The friendships you made as a collegiate member are only part of your Kappa Delta experience.
Alumnae chapters, volunteer opportunities, events and everyday connections can introduce you to sisters from other chapters, generations and communities. A Kappa Delta connection might become a new friend, mentor or someone who simply helps a new place feel a little more like home.
Sisterhood doesn’t end at graduation.
This International Women’s Friendship Month, reach out to a sister you haven’t talked to lately. Make the plans you keep saying you’ll make. Tell a friend how much it means that she has been there through different seasons of your life.
Graduation changes a lot of things. Friendship can change, too. And sometimes, that’s how it grows.
