New Scholarships Established with the Kappa Delta Foundation

MEMPHIS, Tennessee — The Kappa Delta Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of several new scholarships supporting undergraduate and graduate students.

Endowed Scholarships 

Endowed scholarships created by individual donors or groups of donors and are established to last forever.

Ann Pearson Scholarship  

Established by Ann Pearson as part of her estate plans. The scholarship will be a financial need-based scholarship for a student who has a GPA of a B, or point average equivalent, or higher from the Sigma Lambda Chapter of Kappa Delta at Auburn University.

Beth Martin Langford Scholarships

Florida Scholarship

The undergraduate merit-based scholarship will be awarded to a member of Kappa Delta who is either a resident of the state of Florida and/or attending a college or university in Florida.

Kappa Alpha Scholarship

The undergraduate merit-based scholarship will be awarded to a member of the Florida State Chapter of Kappa Delta.

Becky Sperry Wells Nursing Scholarship

Established in memory of Becky Sperry Wells, the scholarship will be an undergraduate merit-based scholarship awarded to a student pursuing a degree and/or career in nursing.  

“It is important to support and empower our collegiate sisters as they follow their dreams. Bryant Family Scholarship  

Established by Karmen Bryant, Zeta Gamma-Arkansas, the scholarship will be an undergraduate financial need-based scholarship awarded to a member of the Zeta Gamma Chapter at the University of Arkansas.

Sybil Dodson Smart Scholarship  

Established by Cheryl Erman, Beta Epsilon-Tulsa, the scholarship will be an undergraduate merit-based scholarship awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Literature, English or Music.

Payne-White Family Scholarship  

Established by Patricia Payne-White, Sigma Phi-Georgia, the scholarship will be an undergraduate merit-based scholarship.

“This was something I have wanted to do for a long time. My faith, family and friends are the three most important things in my life and all three have had a connection to why I chose KD. I continue to be proud of KD and the women who are part of this sisterhood and am glad to honor future KD sisters with a scholarship.” – Patricia Payne-White, Sigma Phi-Georgia

Caitlin Nelson Scholarship  

Established by members, friends and family of the Eta Nu Chapter at Sacred Heart University, the scholarship will be an undergraduate merit-based scholarship awarded to a member who is involved in community service.

“We hope this scholarship inspires others to pursue a lifetime of community service.” – Eta Nu CAB

Dorothy Mears Need-Based Scholarship  

Established by Dot Mears, Gamma Mu-Valdosta State, the scholarship will be an undergraduate financial need-based scholarship awarded to a student who is a Georgia resident or who is enrolled at a college or university in Georgia.  

As the cost of a university education spiraled in recent years, I became increasingly aware that many young women could not stay in school or afford to be a Kappa Delta. This compelled me to take action and make a contribution.  I felt it was important to help a deserving Kappa Delta and to pay my Kappa Delta experience forward. A donation to the foundation is an investment in our future.” -Dot Mears, Gamma Mu-Valdosta State

Gamma Iota Scholarship  

Established by Kappa Delta Sorority and friends, family and alumnae of the Gamma Iota chapter at San Jose State University, the scholarship will be an undergraduate merit-based scholarship awarded to a member of the Gamma Iota Chapter.

Greater Atlanta Day Alumnae Scholarship  

Established by the members of the Greater Atlanta Day Alumnae Chapter, the scholarship will be an undergraduate merit-based scholarship awarded to a member who is either a resident of the state of Georgia and/or attending a college or university in Georgia.  

The Greater Atlanta Day Alumnae Chapter wanted to make a lasting difference on the life of undergraduate students through scholarship and add another way to share that the alumnae chapter is invested in the future of our collegiate sisters.” -Greater Atlanta Day Alumnae Chapter

Helen Alston Eta Omega Scholarship 

Established by Helen Alston, Beta Pi-Florida, the scholarship will be an undergraduate merit-based scholarship awarded to an initiate of the Eta Omega Chapter at Kennesaw State University.  

Janna Fredregill McKale Scholarship  

Established by Janna McKale, Sigma Sigma-Iowa State, the scholarship will be an undergraduate financial need-based scholarship.  

I benefited so much from those who came before me in KD. Through KD as an undergraduate at Sigma Sigma and a member of the Epsilon Tau CAB I have developed life-long friendships, leadership skills, and the ability to interact in the Clemson community to help others. I feel it a duty to contribute what I can, hopefully meaningful, to the sorority and its young women today and in the future.” -Janna McKale, Sigma Sigma-Iowa State

Joy Farmer Dunlap Scholarship  

Established by Joy Farmer Dunlap, Delta Delta-Troy, the scholarship will be a merit-based scholarship awarded to an undergraduate member of the Delta Delta-Troy chapter. If there are no qualified Delta Delta applicants, the scholarship shall be awarded to an undergraduate member with preference given to a student who has served as a volunteer and/or leader in a Christian-based group on campus or in their community.

Over the years, Kappa Delta has had a vital impact on my life through lifetime friendships, leadership opportunities, and our meaningful ritual and core values. I’m deeply grateful for the blessings God has provided throughout my life, and I’m thankful for the friendships found and experiences enjoyed through Kappa Delta. I hope the women who receive this scholarship will see it as a hand of encouragement, a heart full of hope, and a confidence in their abilities as they “strive for that which is honorable, beautiful and highest.” -Joy Farmer Dunlap, Delta Delta-Troy

Courage Over Comfort Scholarship  

Established by Kirsten Kuykendoll, Gamma Nu-Miami, the scholarship will be an undergraduate financial need-based scholarship awarded to a member pursuing a degree in the humanities with the intent to pursue a career that gives them the opportunity to contribute positively to their community, to society and to humanity.  

“Supporting the financial needs of our members enables them to connect with their sisters and invest in KD’s diverse community of women united by the timeless values of our founders. These experiences build a strong sense of belonging, which is critical to being a vulnerable, authentic human and future leader. Michelle Parmley Rabideau Scholarship 

Established by Michelle Rabideau, Sigma Omicron-Illinois, the scholarship will be an undergraduate financial need-based scholarship.  

Pamela Nix Scholarship  

Established by Pamela Nix, Sigma Phi-Georgia, the scholarship will be a merit-based undergraduate scholarship awarded to a member of the Sigma Phi Chapter at the University of Georgia who shows commitment to KD through leadership and service to her chapter.

“Helping other women advance their education and rewarding their leadership is a worthy investment as it is the foundation of her future. Education, leadership and the Kappa Delta network will become even more valuable as technology breaks down geographical boundaries and we compete more globally in our careers.” -Pamela Nix, Sigma Phi-Georgia

Peri Andrus Sexton California Dreamin’ Scholarship 

Established by Peri Sexton, Epsilon Phi-California/Santa Barbara, the scholarship will be a financial need-based scholarship for an undergraduate student, graduate student or an individual pursuing continuing education courses. The recipient shall be (i) a resident of the state of California, (ii) an initiate of a collegiate chapter in California, and/or (iii) attending a college, university, or accredited, not-for-profit institution in California.  

“Going to school in California is expensive, and being part of a sorority is a choice. And it can be one of the first things to go when money gets tight. I want to help women not to have to make that choice.” -Peri Sexton, Epsilon Phi-California/Santa Barbara

Richardson-Plano, Texas Scholarship 

Established by Leanne Justiss, Sigma Epsilon-Texas, the scholarship will be an undergraduate merit-based scholarship awarded to a member initiated in a KD chapter at a college or university in Texas and who is active in her chapter, campus and/or community.  

“My grandfather was an educator, and he instilled the importance of education in my father. As such, I always wanted to include Kappa Delta in my will. One day I just thought, ‘Wow, why not do it now so I might get an opportunity to see who receives the scholarships throughout the years?’  Anything we, as individuals, can do to assist others in furthering their education is a step in the right direction!”-Leanne Justiss, Sigma Epsilon-Texas

Schwark Family Scholarship 

Established by Sabine Schwark, Lambda-Northwestern, the scholarship will be an undergraduate financial need-based scholarship awarded to a member of Kappa Delta.

“The Schwark Family Scholarship honors my parents who immigrated from Germany. Sadly, their higher education was interrupted by World War II. I grew up learning how important an education is and was lucky to have the financial support I needed from my family. There are others, though, who need extra help, especially with the rising cost of an education. My hope is that this scholarship can do that for many years to come.” – Sabine Schwark, Lambda-Northwestern

Sigma Lambda Collegiate Scholarship  

Established by members, friends and family of the Sigma Lambda Chapter at Auburn University, the scholarship will be a merit-based scholarship awarded to a member of the Sigma Lambda Chapter with a minimum 2.7 GPA and who is a rising sophomore, junior or senior.  

“Every member is involved. When the chapter members realized that no more than the cost of a cup of coffee per month could result in a scholarship for Sigma Lambda, they were 100% committed.” – Monteigne Mathison, Chapter Advisory Board Chair, Sigma Lambda-Auburn

Tulsa Area Alumnae Chapter Scholarship  

Established by the Tulsa Area Alumnae Chapter, the scholarship will be an undergraduate merit-based scholarship awarded to a member whose home address is in one of the following cities: Tulsa, Broken Arrow, Owasso, Bixby, Jenks, Sapulpa, Sand Springs, Glenpool, Berryhill, Catoosa, Sperry or Turley. If there are not qualified applicants from the cities listed, the scholarship may be awarded to an undergraduate member whose address is in the state of Oklahoma.

Spend-Down Scholarship 

Spend-down scholarships are established to last for 2+ years and will produce a scholarship until there are no longer funds available to award.  

College Avenue Scholarship  

Established by Liz Holmes, Beta Rho-San Diego State, the scholarship will be an undergraduate merit-based scholarship awarded to a student who is an initiate or affiliate of the Beta Rho Chapter at San Diego State University.  

“I hope my gift can relieve the stress that surrounds finances, especially during this time, and allow a member to enjoy her collegiate experience.” -Liz Holmes, Beta Rho-San Diego State

One-Time Scholarships  

One-time scholarships are established to provide a scholarship for one year.  

Edith Wacksman Scholarship  

Established by Dee Dee Wacksman, Sigma Kappa-Ohio State, the scholarship will be an undergraduate merit-based scholarship awarded to a student pursuing a degree/major in a health care field.  

“I’m inspired to support a scholarship through Kappa Delta  because my chapter became a home away from home for me when I attended a very large university many miles away from my family. I received lots of leadership training and made lifelong friends. It’s important to me to make life easier for the next generation, because I had it pretty easy in college. I can afford to pay it forward so I will.” -Dee Dee Wacksman, Sigma Kappa-Ohio State

Epsilon Omega Alumnae Scholarship  

Established by Trudy Webb Banta, Carole Swope Monroe and Alice Ford Wilson, alumnae of Epsilon Omega- Kentucky. The scholarship will be an undergraduate financial need-based scholarship awarded to a student who has a GPA of 2.5 or higher and is a member of the Epsilon Omega Chapter at the University of Kentucky.  

Eta Upsilon Scholarship  

Established by Alycia Thornton, Eta Upsilon-North Carolina State, the scholarship will be an undergraduate merit-based scholarship awarded to a member from the Eta Upsilon chapter at North Carolina State University.

“The importance of giving back was instilled in me by my parents and grandparents and it brings me so much joy to know that I’m making a difference for Kappa Delta. Through this scholarship, I want to ensure that women in my initiate chapter know that alumnae value their hard work as both students and chapter leaders and want to support them.” – Alycia Thornton, Eta Upsilon-North Carolina State

Jennifer Priebe Wood Scholarship 

Established by Jennifer Priebe Wood, Zeta Gamma-Arkansas, the scholarship will be an undergraduate merit-based scholarship awarded to a member from the Zeta Gamma chapter at Arkansas who is active in her chapter.

Joy McVey Hugick Scholarship  

Established by Joy Hugick, Delta Eta-South Florida, the scholarship will be an undergraduate financial need-based scholarship awarded to a member of the Eta Mu Chapter at Georgia College and State University.

“I worked multiple jobs during college and needed to take out student loans. Sometimes it was difficult to find the money to pay my dues, but I always did because I knew I was part of something bigger than myself. Now, serving as both a chapter advisory board member and undergraduate scholarship committee member for several years, I see firsthand the struggles some of our collegiate members have balancing work, academics, and being able to pay their dues. My hope is that this gift will help lighten the load for one of our sisters who is struggling financially so she can maintain her membership in Kappa Delta.” – Joy McVey Hugick, Delta Eta-South Florida

Lyn Routenberg Scholarship  

Established by Lyn Routenberg, Epsilon Omega-Kentucky, the scholarship will be an undergraduate financial need-based scholarship awarded to a member of the Eta Omega Chapter at Kennesaw State University.  

Mary Lib White Gamma Delta Scholarship  

Established by Mary Lib and John A. White, the scholarship will be an undergraduate merit-based scholarship awarded to a member of the Gamma Delta chapter at East Tennessee State University.

 “Kappa Delta has played a significant role in my life, not only as a member of the Gamma Delta chapter at East Tennessee State University, but also as a member of alumnae chapters since graduation. I’m pleased to continue my support of the Kappa Delta Foundation by establishing a named scholarship at my alma mater. Meeting recently with members of the Gamma Delta chapter, I saw how committed they are to living the values of KD by making a difference in the world through their service, philanthropy, kindness and leadership.” – Mary Lib White, Gamma Delta-East Tennessee State

Phyllis “Phiz” Cuomo Scholarship  

Established by Dr. Gerard Cuomo, the scholarship will be an undergraduate merit-based scholarship awarded to a member of the Delta Beta Chapter at Eastern Illinois University.  

“Phyllis Ann “Phiz” Cuomo, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, was a gentle and kind person that made an amazing positive impact on the lives of others. “Phiz” was a hard worker and had a successful life leading and mentoring those who needed help and guidance.” -Dr. Gerard Cuomo

Sigma Omega Sisterhood Scholarship  

Established by Jaynee Groseth, Sigma Omega-Montana State, the scholarship will be an undergraduate merit-based scholarship for a first-generation student who is also a first- or second-year student at the time the application is submitted.

 

“We are so grateful to our thoughtful donors for their generosity,” said Beth Martin Langford (Kappa Alpha-Florida State), Kappa Delta Foundation board chair. “It is wonderful for our sisters to receive the help they need to pursue their dreams and professional goals. I also hope these scholarships will help to build confidence and inspire our sisters to action.”
