Kappa Delta volunteers are our foundation. They give their time, energy and expertise to keep Kappa Delta moving forward, and our organization would not be the same without them. Every month on the Emerald Edit, we’ll highlight one of our many incredible volunteers to showcase the impact they have on our members.
For more than 40 years, Jean Shricker Grader, Gamma Zeta-Texas Christian, has served Kappa Delta as a volunteer. Serving in a number of roles and supporting multiple chapters in that time, she has learned what helps a chapter advisory board thrive and the value of giving back to Kappa Delta.
Jean has spent more than a decade of her 40 years supporting the members of Beta Upsilon-Susquehanna. She currently serves as the CAB-learning and development, supporting the VP-L&D, director of member education and director of Ritual. Though she lives two hours from campus, Jean maintains connection with chapter leaders through phone calls and makes the trip for monthly formal chapter meetings and Ritual events.
Of Jean’s service, current Beta Upsilon CAB chair Samantha Mauriello, Beta Upsilon-Susquehanna, says, “She brings a plethora of knowledge, so much love for Kappa Delta and a true warming spirit to our organization.”
We recently asked Jean about her volunteer experience and what serving on CAB has meant to her.
“Kappa Delta gave me so much during my time as a collegian both at Gamma Zeta Chapter at Texas Christian University and Nu Chapter at Oklahoma State, I wanted our Greek system and particularly Kappa Delta to be active and strong for generations to come. My mother volunteered with her sorority when I was growing up, so it was normal for me to follow in her footsteps. I have both learned so much and met so many sisters, both collegian and alumnae, who have become close friends.”
“My advice to any current CAB members or sisters considering joining a CAB is: It is the current collegians’ chapter and except in matters of Kappa Delta policy and legal issues, it is their right to make decisions for their chapter. It is the CAB’s job to advise and not make their decisions. Just enjoy our collegiate sisters!”
“Kappa Delta has encouraged me to grow as a person and do things I never imagined I would do. I love getting to know our collegiate sisters, seeing what they are dealing with and watching them grow as people. I particularly enjoy working with a chapter who, for various reasons, is struggling and seeing them grow and improve. As a long-term Kappa Delta volunteer, I have worked with a wide variety of chapters and situations. The one thing that I have found all chapters need from their CAB is a positive attitude and the Kappa Delta love and values that bind us together.”
There are so many opportunities to share your time and talent. From working with a local collegiate chapter on a chapter advisory board or house corporation board to serving on a foundation committee like the scholarship review committee, we are grateful for the thousands of alumnae who give back to KD.
