Kappa Delta volunteers are our foundation. They give their time, energy and expertise to keep Kappa Delta moving forward, and our organization would not be the same without them. Every month on the Emerald Edit, we’ll highlight one of our many incredible volunteers to showcase the impact they have on our members.
Christine Schwermann (Sigma Gamma–Kansas State) has been serving as a Kappa Delta housing volunteer for three years, dedicating about five hours a week to supporting Sigma Gamma chapter. Currently a member of the Local House Corporation (LHC) Board, Christine is transitioning out of her role as LHC President while mentoring her successor and preparing to lead a new fundraising and communication program with Sigma Gamma alumnae.
Christine’s passion for volunteering comes from her love of working with college women and her belief in the lifelong value of sorority membership. “Knowing that our chapter not only survives but thrives is what makes this work so meaningful to me,” she says.
We caught up with Christine to learn more about her experience as a housing volunteer and what inspires her commitment to Kappa Delta!
What is the best part of being a Kappa Delta housing volunteer? Fulfilling the house facility upgrades that help make our chapter house highly competitive on campus as well as enjoyable to our collegiate members.
Tell us about a memorable moment you’ve had volunteering. So many! One of our parents helped us paint our formal living room, which helped immensely. The new color, neutral but dynamic, made everyone so happy. We were also able to add a new sofa, rug and artwork to the TV/dining space. Heading into recruitment that fall, the new look of the facility shined and definitely contributed to the chapter’s success.
What advice do you have for other Kappa Deltas who are interested in volunteering? Our chapters need alumnae volunteers to help them thrive. If we appreciated our time in KD as collegians, we must be willing to help create an outstanding experience for the next generation of Kappa Deltas. The collegians can’t be successful alone, they need us!
There are so many opportunities to share your time and talent. From working with a local collegiate chapter on a chapter advisory board or house corporation board to serving on a foundation committee like the scholarship review committee, we are grateful for the thousands of alumnae who give back to KD.
