Recruitment is often filled with big expectations. You may picture meaningful conversations, an instant sense of connection and a clear feeling you’ve found exactly where you belong. 

But sometimes, that is not how the story begins. 

Maybe your first conversation feels awkward. Maybe you forget what you wanted to say or leave a chapter event wondering whether you made the right impression. Maybe the chapter you expected to love doesn’t feel quite right, while another surprises you. You may feel nervous, uncertain or even disappointed along the way. 

That does not mean your recruitment experience is going wrong. 

Some of the best recruitment stories begin with uncertainty. They unfold slowly, through honest conversations, unexpected connections and the courage to remain open to what comes next. 

Confidence Does Not Mean Having Every Answer 

Recruitment can feel like a time when you are expected to be completely sure of yourself, but confidence isn’t about always knowing exactly what to say, how to act or which decision to make.

Confidence can be walking into a room even when you feel nervous, asking a thoughtful question, sharing something genuine about yourself or taking time to consider what you truly value. It can also mean letting go of the experience you imagined so you can appreciate the one happening in front of you. 

You don’t need to perform a perfect version of yourself to find belonging. The most meaningful connections are often built when you allow others to see who you really are. 

Give Yourself Permission to Be Surprised 

It’s natural to go into recruitment with assumptions. Maybe you’ve heard stories about certain chapters, imagined yourself in a particular organization or created a checklist of what you think your experience should look like. 

Recruitment may challenge those expectations. 

A chapter you knew little about may become the place where you feel most comfortable! A conversation that begins slowly may become one of the most memorable moments of your experience. The people who make you feel seen may not be the people you expected to meet. 

Remaining open does not mean ignoring your instincts. It means giving yourself enough space to recognize possibilities you may not have considered before. 

Focus on How You Feel 

During recruitment, it can be easy to focus on whether others like you. Try to also notice how you feel when you are with them! 

Do you feel comfortable being yourself? Are your ideas and experiences met with genuine interest? Can you imagine being encouraged to grow while also being accepted for who you are today?

Belonging is not about finding a place where every moment is perfect. It is about finding people who make room for your full story and who will walk alongside you as it continues. 

Your Story Is Still Being Written 

A difficult moment does not define your recruitment experience. Neither does one awkward conversation, one unexpected change or one day when you feel unsure. 

The beginning of your story may be messy, surprising or completely different from what you planned. That is OK! 

Trust yourself enough to stay present. Be curious. Ask questions. Take a breath when you need, and remember confidence grows one brave choice at a time. 

The best recruitment stories don’t always start out perfectly. Sometimes, they begin when you release the pressure to have the perfect experience and give yourself permission to discover where you truly belong.
